Need help deciding which product to use? This is what our Pharmacist Sarah has to say:
For regular seasonal allergies there are 3 main choices:
1. Claritin (loratadine)
2. Zyrtec (Cetirizine)
3. Allegra (Fexofenadine)
All last 24 hours and are equally effective for most people. It varies by individual which one works best for you, usually I recommend loratadine as the first choice because it's the cheapest. Cetirizine can cause drowsiness in about 30% of people so if that occurs be sure to take it at night time!
Sometimes, if you've been taking an allergy medication for a long time you'll find it becomes less effective over time. In this case, switch to a different drug and you should be able to find some relief! As time passes you may be able to use the original drug again.
Fluticasone nasal spray is a steroid and therefore should only be used if oral medications are not helping enough. Steroids can decrease the effectiveness of your immune system and therefore fluticasone may lead to a greater risk of sinus infections.
